I’m so glad that the elections are over.  Political debates on facebook and in person were starting to exhaust me.  And this is coming from someone who actually likes to debate. Come talk with me about controversial issues anytime.  I’ve finally figured out why it’s been so exshausting.
It’s because people have been so…so..what’s the word?…vehement.  I’m all for passion…but vehemence includes in my mind a certain element of anger and vitriol.  And that I cannot abide.
Persuade, debate, discuss, be passionate. YES!   But also… listen, try to understand, have diplomacy, be gracious.

And now for the awesome quotes that sum up my saddness and response to the election results.  Dad I think you’ll like these.

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.” “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”
― Alexis de Tocqueville
